Top Apps Helping People Make New Friends in 2026:

In recent years, more people have been turning to digital platforms to build genuine, platonic connections as loneliness and social isolation continue to rise.

The issue has become significant enough that in 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General classified loneliness as a public health concern. Remote workers—who often miss daily in-person interactions—and younger generations looking to build social circles around shared interests are among those driving demand for friendship-focused platforms.

As online dating has become widely accepted, the stigma around meeting people through apps has largely disappeared. This shift has opened the door for a new category of apps specifically designed to help users form friendships and connect with local communities.

Data from Appfigures shows that more than a dozen friendship-oriented apps have already generated around $16 million in consumer spending in the U.S. this year alone. Popular platforms such as Timeleft, Meet5, and Bumble’s BFF feature have contributed to approximately 4.3 million downloads in 2025 so far.

These apps offer a more comfortable alternative to traditional social approaches, like striking up conversations with strangers in public places. Since everyone on these platforms shares the same goal—making friends rather than finding romantic partners—it becomes much easier and less awkward to start conversations.

From well-established platforms like Meetup to newer entrants like 222, there is now a wide range of options available for anyone looking to build meaningful, real-world friendships.
